Printing defect characterized by broken or missing halftone dots, the result of incomplete image transfer from the cells of the gravure cylinder to the paper surface. Skips (also called snow, or speckle in gravure printing, and breaks in other printing methods) are usually caused by surface or structural characteristics of paper (such as wild formation and low compressibility and conformability) preventing the alteration of the paper's surface contour to the extent required to completely contact the inked surface.
