In typography, metal type characters of one font that have been mixed up—purportedly accidentally—with characters of another font. Pi type also refers to unexpected or garbled phototypesetter output, and to pi characters. See Pi Characters. The aggravation of mixing similar letters in rhe same tray resulted in the dictum to printers' apprentices to "mind your p's and q's."
