On-Machine Coating

The coating of the surface of a paper performed while it is still on the papermaking machine. The advantages of on-machine coating involve elimination of the necessity of winding, packing, and shipping paper rolls of base stock to a separate coating plant. Disadvantages include the necessity of having to shut down the entire papermaking process if difficulties in the coating section arise (as well as the necessity of shutting down the coating of paper if difficulties in the other portions of the papermaking system arise), and the fact that on-machine coating processes are not suitable for all paper grades.
