Off-Machine Coating

The coating of the surface of a paper performed after it has come off the papermaking machine, as a separate operation, often by a mill that specializes in coating. The advantages of off-machine coating are the speed and efficiency of utilizing special equipment designed just for coating, and the base stock produced by more than one papermaking machine or process can be coated using one machine. Disadvantages include the necessity of winding, packing, and shipping paper rolls. See also Coating and On-Machine Coating.
