In web offset lithography, festooning refers to the act of giving an unwinding paper roll a long lead time before it enters the printing section of the press. This is often needed to give tightly-wound paper rolls a chance to "relax" and retain their original dimensions, lest registration problems occur. The set of collapsible rollers used to accomplish this is known as a festoon.
