A means of allowing for the effect of dot gain by reducing the size of the halftone dots on halftone color separation films. Dot gain is often the most pronounced in the middle tone regions of an image, and it is typically these areas that undergo dot size reduction. The percentage of the dot size gain varies according to the printing process (i.e, sheetfed or web offset lithography) and the paper characteristics. See Dot Gain.
