The basic indivisible unit of some printed images—commonly photographs—produced by photographically exposing or digitally imaging a continuous tone image to a screen, which breaks the image up into discrete dots. Since most printing processes are incapable of printing continuous tone images, such images need to be broken down into individual dots of varying shades of color or gray, each tiny solid dot printing discretely and which together give the illusion of a continuous tone image.
