A substance applied to the base material of a photographic film to prevent halation, or a blurring of photographic images caused by light reflecting from a film's base material back through the already-exposed emulsion. The antihalation dye absorbs these light rays before they can be reflected. On some flexible films, the dye also serves as an anti-curl agent. Antihalation dye is dissolved out of the film during development.
