In general chemical terms, an emulsion is the colloidal suspension of one liquid in another. In photography, an emulsion is any light-sensitive coating—made from a variety of materials, most commonly a silver halide suspended in gelatin—used in photographic processes. An emulsion will react to actinic light when exposed, forming a reproduction of that image, either negatively or positively. This is the basis of photography.
