A device used in the manufacture of ink to further disperse the solid pigment particles in the fluid ink vehicle that utilizes three steel rollers, revolving in opposite directions at varying speeds to chop up the pigment particles and disperse them thoroughly. The ink slurry is put into the machine's hopper, and as it passes through the nips of the rollers the shearing force breaks up the particles and disperses them, and the milled ink flows out of the front of the machine into a container. The hardness of the pigment particles may necessitate additional passes through the machine. The speed of the rollers, the size of the nips, and the temperature of the system can be adjusted to improve the milling efficiency. (See also Ball Mill, Sand/Shot Mill, and Colloid Mill.)
