Serial asynchronous data transmission method to signify to the receiver that no more data bits follow. The stop bit(s) are longer in duration than normal data bits and this extended length allows it (them) to be distinguished from normal data bits. Serial communications may be configured to allow for either 1, 1.5 or 2 stop bits (however, the most common number is 1).
