In book manufacturing, a term referring to the number of sheets of paper that will occupy a unit area of thickness under the abrupt application of pressure and compression, as during the casing-in operation, or binding the pages in a book cover. Due to the "nesting" or packing together of the pages during this operation, the thickness of the book will be less than the number obtained by simply multiplying the thickness (or bulk) of a single sheet by the total number of sheets.
