Rotary Ink

A type of printing ink commonly used for letterpress printing of books, magazines, and other publications. There are essentially two varieties of rotary ink: book ink and heatset ink. Book inks are fairly fluid, and vary in tack and consistency depending on the surface hardness (and other properties) of book paper on which it is to be printed. Heatset inks for letterpress printing consist of synthetic resins mixed with low-volatility hydrocarbon solvents, which have boiling points in the range of 400:500ºF and evaporate very quickly in that range of temperatures.
