The conversion or reproduction of a continuous tone image to one with only a few distinct tones, or having a flat, poster-like quality. When images are posterized photographically, high-contrast film is used to separate the continuous tones into a few distinct shades. Multiple exposures and colored gels are used to create a color-composite image. Posterization can also be performed digitally, in a photo manipulation program, commonly by specifying a set number of gradient steps.
