Term for any foreign particle embedded in a paper surface that is pulled out of the paper by the press's blanket during printing. The most common cause of pickouts are random bits of particles of filler, sizing, coatings, etc., that collect on papermaking machine rollers, felts, or drying cylinders and get pressed into the moving paper web. Common sources of pickouts are scale, rust, and slime spots. (See also Calender Spots.)
