Out-of-Roundness

A paper web defect characterized by a paper roll that is not perfectly round, caused by storing a roll on its side, excessive clamp pressure, dropping the roll on its side, or any other similar indignity. Running an out-of-round roll through a web press will cause it to unroll in a jerky manner, and it will unwind into the press with uneven tension, causing misregister, distortion of printed images, and other problems with printability and runnability. 'Out-of-roundness is also a consideration of any ideally round object, such as printing press rollers and cylinders. The measurement of the out-of-roundness of press rollers and cylinders is called its total indicated runout.
