A quality of certain papers, components of paper or non-image areas of lithographic plates that causes them to absorb and/or be receptive to water.

In offset lithography, a hydrophilic substance is likely to be receptive to water and fountain solutions and repellent to oils and oil-based inks. Hydrophilic substances are also lipophobic. (See also Hydrophobic.)
