An alternate term for a type of paper pulp produced by mechanically grinding logs of wood against a rotating stone (also called mechanical pulp; see mechanical pulping). Groundwood pulp, having high level of impurities such as lignin (in contrast to pulp produced using chemical methods), is used for low-quality paper such as that used in newspapers, telephone directories and other non-permanent printing jobs.
