In binding and finishing, the process of assembling printed signatures and placing them in the correct sequence for binding. Gathering is often performed by automated gathering machines which operate much like collating machines: each signature placed in a different pocket, and after all the pockets have been filled, the machine assembles them in the desired sequence. A type of gathering in which signatures are wrapped around other signatures (such as the prelude to saddle-stitching) is called inserting, while the gathering of individual sheets (rather than of signatures) is called collating.
