In photography, the immersion of a developed film in a chemical solution designed to remove the unexposed silver halide from the emulsion while leaving the exposed metallic silver intact. Fixing solution, often made of sodium or ammonia thiosulfate, renders the silver halide water-soluble, allowing it to be washed out of the film in a water bath, often the last stop of a film. Fixingâalso known as stabilization, especially when combined with the washing phaseâis necessary to render a photographic image permanent.
