A type of computer output device—or printer—that uses patterns of small dots to construct an image. Although just about any computer printer could be considered a dot-matrix printer (including a laser printer), the term is most commonly used to refer to a type of impact printer popular before the advent of inexpensive laser printers, characterized by printing on fanfold paper with light printing made of very large, visible dots.
