In color prepress, a black-and-white negative which contains an image corresponding only to the amount of a single color required to reproduce a full-color original. Full-color images are printed using four separate colors—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black—which are combined in varying amounts to produce all the interstitial colors. Consequently, a full-color original needs to undergo color separation, a photographic or digital means of reducing a color image to its four component colors and producing negatives for each of them. Four color separation negatives are required for process color work. A color separation negative is also called a printer. (See Color Separation.)
