An early form of bookbinding which gradually replaced the scroll. The first codex was essentially two wooden sticks which held each end of a roll of papyrus or parchment, and eventually evolved into a means of binding individual leaves together—utilizing either glue or thread—with wooden boards (called half bindings) forming the front and back covers.
