A test to determine a paper or paperboard's water absorption, or adequacy of sizing, in which a paper sample is weighed, and placed in a watertight rubber-backed metal ring. The ring is filled with water, exposing the top side of the sample to water. After a set time, the water is drained, and residual water blotted off the surface of the paper, at which point the sample is weighed again. The amount of weight the sample has gained is its water absorbency.
