A unit of measurement, used to measure illumination, based on a standard source. At one time, the standard source was actually a candle of a specified composition and possessing specified dimensions. Currently, the standard source is defined as a 0.16-square-inch theoretical blackbody glowing at a temperature of 1,496 K (or 1,769ºC). The candle is thus defined as one-sixtieth of that intensity. A candle is also known (primarily in Europe and elsewhere outside of the United States) as a candela. One candle equals 12.6 lumens. See also Foot Candle and Lumen.
