In scanning, a scanner using as its optical mechanism a cathode-ray tube which rasterizes an image (typically reflection copy). The beam generated by the CRT is reflected through the device's lens and through a photomultiplier tube, where it is converted to an electrical signal and, ultimately, a digital signal capable of being input into a computer. CRT flying spot scanners are capable of very high resolutions.
