A term used in book manufacturing which designates a paper's thickness (called bulk or caliper) in inches per pound of basis weight. It is obtained by dividing the thickness of a single sheet by the paper's basis weight. Bulking index is used to compare the bulk of papers having the same basic size and varying basis weights.
