On the Internet, a system designed to locate files available by means of anonymous FTP. Programs are used to regularly access all anonymous FTP sites and create and update a database of publicly available files. Most Internet service providers include Archie which, when called up, accesses this centralized database, providing the location and availability of a requested file. Anonymous FTP can then be used to retrieve the file. Archie itself was named for the comic book character of that name; other related programs include Veronica, and Jughead.
