Term for a number of different devices that measure a paper's surface smoothness in terms of the rate at which a volume of air passes between a smooth surface in the machine and the surface of a paper sample. See Bekk Smoothness Tester, Bendtsen Smoothness Tester, Gurley Smoothness Tester, and Sheffield Smoothness Gauge. All of these machines are calibrated differently, so results are not interchangeable among them. (See Smoothness.)
